DESCRIPTION:Lexington’s urban forest is made up of all the trees in yards\, in parks\, and along streets across the\ntown. Trees improve our lives by making Lexington a cooler\, cleaner\, more beautiful place to live. But\ntrees require care from the people and Town of Lexington to stay healthy and strong. \nThe Town of Lexington is developing an Urban Forest Master Plan to set a vision for the future of its\nurban forestry program.  A presentation about the Urban Forest Master Plan will be accompanied with activities and prompts to provide input\, and will be followed by an “Ask an Arborist” Q&A session. \nThe presentation will be hybrid and interactive\, where those in attendance will be able to suggest ideas and provide feedback about their experiences with trees in Lexington. \nSnacks and light refreshments will be provided. \nInformation on how to join virtually can be found on the Lexington Urban Forestry Master Plan website.  \n

SUMMARY:The Moth Ball-  Friday September 18\, 7-11 PM
DESCRIPTION:Following last year’s popular and oversubscribed event join us once again for a repeat performance of a special kind of ball this September\, but don’t worry about bringing your dancing shoes! Once the sun goes down\, bugs will be the ones showing off their moves. During this nature walk hosted by both the Town of Lexington Conservation Division and CLC\, and with special guest Jace Porter of the Global Entomology Coalition\, we will get up close and personal with the night time residents of our local conservation areas. We will be using a large sheet illuminated with ultraviolet light to attract all manner of fascinating critters – moths\, beetles\, flies\, spiders\, stick insects\, or true bugs are just some of the things we might see (and if you’re curious what the differences are between “bugs” and “true bugs\,” then this might be the event for you!). We will also have on display a collection of previously captured and pinned specimens of all shapes\, sizes\, and species to supplement the living bugs we encounter. Come learn all about some of the near-limitless forms of arthropods with us\, and see what the buzz is all about. \nLong pants\, long sleeves\, closed-toed shoes\, and a headlamp (preferably with a red light setting) are strongly recommended. Hooded shirts/sweaters or mesh head nets are recommended. Magnifying glasses are encouraged. If you’re familiar with the Seek or iNaturalist apps\, we encourage using them too! \nAll ages are welcome\, but we recommend attendees be 12 or older. \nMeet Evan Paige\, Assistant Conservation Director\, at the Estabrook School parking lot (117 Grove Street\, Lexington\, MA 02420) before walking to Hennessey Field\, which is located to the east of the school at the end of Robinson Road. \nRegistration required\, limited to 20 participants. Each season the land provides them with diverse plant life. The goats are very specific to what they need to eat depending on many factors. We will have two Lexington herds\, totaling over a dozen adult female dairy goats\, and a few youngsters. Learn how the goats in our town are working to keep the invasive plants from taking over. DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Jeff Howry\, a Lexington historian and archaeologist\, in exploring Willard’s Woods. The area presents many examples of how our New England landscape was shaped by nature and occupied by humans. The tour will show participants many of the features of the 100 acres that tell stories of what has happened in the past 12\,000 years. Posters and artifacts will supplement the narrative as we explore the various terrains and historic areas within the conservation area\, including images not seen before. DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, October 18\, 11:00 AM \nThis walk is an opportunity to learn to use iNaturalist to observe and share biodiversity information in Lexington’s conservation land. iNaturalist is an online social network of people who care about biodiversity and want to contribute to knowledge and learn from each other. Data captured in iNaturalist has been used for many research projects across the globe. So far\, people in Lexington have made over 30\,000 observations comprising over 3360 species of plants\, birds\, bugs\, fungi etc in iNaturalist. The walk will take about 1.5 hours. \nPlease download the iNaturalist app to your phone (iPhone or Android) and create an account before you arrive.  \nMeet on Garfield Street near Garfield park\, parking available along the road. \nHeavy rain cancels. We will start at West Farm on Oak Street and traverse the overlook of Wilson Farm and Pleasant Street in the distance. Then along a few streets to enter Sutherland Woods from Peacock Farm Road\, a few more streets\, then through the woods of Liberty Heights above Massachusetts Avenue\, returning to our start point.
